The Professional Dance Division (PDD) consists of four companies: Aleye (Boys ages 9-13), IMANI Jr., (girls ages 7-13), Girlz of IMANI (girls ages 14 –16) and NIA Dance Troupe (girls and boys ages 16-18). The program serves between 60-65 young people annually. To ensure that they receive sufficient training company members are simultaneously enrolled in our Performance Arts Program.
In addition to their regularly scheduled classes and rehearsals, our dancers also participate in master classes, workshops and dance intensives conducted by world-renowned choreographers and companies. Through our active networks we have secured placement and full and partial scholarships for our students to attend programs with Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Dance Theater of Harlem, Earl Mosley Institute of the Arts (EMIA), and Ronald K. Brown/Evidence. Our companies have performed for major events and televised programs. Since the launch of our International and Domestic Youth Empowerment through the Arts Tours in 2007, NIA Dance Troupe, Girlz of IMANI, and Aleye Boyz Troupe have performed, conducted lecture demonstrations, and engaged in community service projects in South Africa; Dakar, Senegal; London, England; Accra, Ghana, Trinidad; and New Orleans, LA.
Developing leadership and marketable skills is an important goal of the program. Towards that end, all company members play a progressively significant role in the management of their respective companies. Their responsibilities include: assisting with the management of company auditions; running company rehearsals (e.g. leading the warm up, running rep, etc.); designing and constructing costumes; choreography; conducting workshops and lecture demonstrations (with proper training); fundraising; and planning and executing community service projects.
